You could talk about how scary the novel was when it was written. How many books were out there written about London being under attack by tripods from outer space? That’s pretty imaginative and ahead of it’s time. Also think about what was going on in the world when it was written. Was H.G. Wells making a social commentary on what was happening in the late 1800′s?
Note that the author began as a journalist, and how this may have influenced the style in which he describes the events. England in the 1890s felt threatened by Germany (the “Battle of Woking” was a popular novel of the day–not by Wells–describing a German invasion). This is showing that London and the Empire are vulnerable in many ways. The book was Wells second major SF novel (after “The Time Machine”) and pretty much established him as a major writer. If you wish to pad the review a bit, you could end it with a few lines about how this story was the father of a huge amount of fiction, nearly all of it of lesser quality than Wells, describing aliens attacking Earth.
Wells was a socialist, and was able to view with not too much concern events which destroyed the old, capitalist order while leaving enough to build a new, better society.
