Can you quote the author when writing a book review?

um, of course. how can you write a good book review without quoting the author?
just cite it correctly.
Yes. Falls under fair use provisions I believe.
Is this going to be published? If not, you have no worries about permission.
If so, the publication that is publishing it would know how to deal with that–but it is generally considered “fair use” unless you quote an entire poem or substantial part of a song.
Yes of course you can.. here is one way to do it.. Mention the author, which you have already done supposedly by writing the review… then put into quote marks the quotation. Especially if you are giving an example of his works. Here is an example: Mark Twain remarked in his memoirs “The reports of my death have been greatly exagerated.” You get the idea.
You can quote anyone without permission, as long as credit is given where credit is due. Where the problem comes is when you try to claim the work as your own.
No, you don’t need to ask permission to quote from a book for purposes of the review. You are actually providing, at the very least, the book’s title, the author’s name, ISBN, and publishing house. If you are reviewing using a “galley” however, publishing houses specifically request that you use a final copy of the book to do so, as galleys and the final version of the book may have differences.
As a P.S. you can write a review without necessarily quoting the author, so for clarification, no, it is not compulsory to quote from a book when writing a review .
it depends on what is written on the copywrite page some books will say no portion of the work may be reprinted without the express written permission of the author or the publisher etc etc i would assume that that would include a book review all book reviews i have ever seen just give a short synopsis of what the book is about without quoting any portion of the book but of they do list the title and the author
