I have to write a review book for a class of American history of the university. I must be the modern history of the novel or non-fiction in the United States. Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Eh . . . maybe something like Sister Carrie by Theodore Dreiser, its fiction and was written during American modernism. Or, you could always go with the good standby, The Jungle by Upton Sinclair, it definitely pertains to American History, modern and otherwise.
You should read The Plot Against America by Phillip Roth. It follows the course of American History up through the onset of World War II, but steers off course as a “what if” exploration of what would have happened if Charles Lindbergh had won the presidency and sympathized with the nazi party. One of the best books I’ve ever read; fiction, historical, or any genre.
